India's Green Shipbuilding Revolution Gains Momentum

India's efforts to build eco-friendly vessels have taken a significant step forward with the commencement of construction on four advanced battery-electric harbour tugs at Cochin Shipyard. The tugs, designed for demanding harbour operations, will use battery-electric propulsion and zero direct emissions when charged with green power. This milestone marks a major achievement in India's green shipbuilding journey, with the country aiming to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to global decarbonisation goals.

A Growing Partnership

The shipbuilding agreement between Cochin Shipyard Limited and Svitzer reflects the growing investment in India's maritime supply chain. The vessels, built to Svitzer's specifications, are part of a minimum of four contracted by the company. Svitzer, a global towage and marine services provider, has evaluated shipyards across the world before selecting Cochin Shipyard for this project. The company has a proven track record of building efficient and reliable vessels, with over 3,000 commercial towage jobs completed worldwide.

A Decade of Innovation

The TRAnsverse 2600e tug design has been in development for several years, with Svitzer working closely with shipyards and engineers to refine the design and improve its efficiency. The design has already proven its worth, with 18 TRAnsverse vessels under construction worldwide. The TRAnsverse 2600e tug is designed to operate in complex and close-quarter environments, involving different types and sizes of vessels and challenging weather and tidal conditions.

A Major Boost to India's Shipbuilding Industry

The construction of these four battery-electric harbour tugs at Cochin Shipyard marks a significant step forward in India's efforts to build green vessels locally. The project is in line with the Centre's Maritime India Vision 2030, Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, and the "Make in India" programme. The vessels are also expected to support India's Green Tug Transition Programme, while helping build domestic expertise in electric propulsion and high-specification vessel construction.
