The Indian defence sector is at the forefront of developing counter-drone capabilities to counter the growing threat of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The Indian Army, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and Indian Air Force are exploring various concepts to counter cheap drone swarms, point defence against hexacopters, and loitering munitions and reconnaissance drones.

One of the most innovative approaches being explored is the use of airborne drones to launch interceptor drones. This concept involves modifying existing vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) interceptor drones to be carried and launched from short-range UAVs and medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) drones. By doing so, the Indian Army can extend the range and loiter time of its counter-drone capabilities, enabling the interceptor drones to pursue and engage hostile UAVs more effectively.

The proposed system is designed to be compatible with the Indian Army's existing SR-UAV and MALE UAVs, implying a preference for modifying existing interceptors rather than developing an entirely new mothership UAV. This approach is expected to reduce the time and energy spent climbing, giving the interceptor drone more range and loiter time for pursuit and engagement.

The Indian defence sector is also exploring other concepts to develop counter-drone capabilities. The DRDO is reportedly working on a MALE UAV mothership concept to counter cheap drone swarms, while the Indian Air Force has suggested a concept of using helicopters as a platform for AI-guided radars and guns to engage loitering munitions and reconnaissance drones. The Indian Army is also working on hand kinetic interceptors for point defence against hexacopters and other small UAVs.

The development of counter-drone capabilities is a complex task, requiring significant investment in research and development. However, the Indian defence sector is committed to developing innovative solutions to counter the growing threat of UAVs. The use of airborne drones to launch interceptor drones is a game-changer in the hunt for rogue UAVs, and it is expected to play a significant role in the Indian defence sector's counter-drone strategy.
